theScore.bet heading to Illinois
The Illinois sports betting industry has gotten off to a big start, and operators are taking notice. There is pretty good competition for a sports betting license in Illinois, and Score Media and Gaming just earned market access.
Score Media and Gaming Inc. will be launching theScore Bet app in Illinois after a deal was reached with Caesars Entertainment. Caesars owns and operates the Harrah’s Joliet Hotel & Casino, one of the most popular casinos in Illinois, and theScore Bet will receive access to that online sports betting license.
TheScore Bet is currently live in four other states throughout the US, but it could be an app that sees tremendous growth in 2021. Iowa saw the launch of theScore Bet app in February, and it is also available in Colorado, Indiana, and New Jersey.
Score Media and Gaming is a company that is based in Canada, but it has its sights set on becoming a bigger presence in the US. New Jersey is the biggest market in the US, and launching in Illinois will give theScore Bet another big opportunity.
Caesars Entertainment is set to receive a portion of the revenue from theScore Bet after it launches in Illinois, but those details were not disclosed in the announcement. This is a 10-year deal with a potential 10-year extension added on if both parties agree to it.
There were just five Illinois online sportsbook apps available at the end of 2020, but that number has already grown in 2021. Penn National Gaming launched its Barstool Sportsbook app in early March, and Unibet is expected to launch before summer as well.
Depending on the registration rules at the time of launch for theScore Bet, it could be able to get off to a great start. Currently, remote registration is allowed based on an executive order from Governor J.B. Pritzker.
Score Media and Gaming recently agreed to a deal with the PGA Tour that will make it an official sports betting partner of that organization. There are other professional teams in Illinois that will likely become a potential partner of theScore as it gets closer to launch.
February Numbers Expected Soon
The Illinois Gaming Board is expected to announce the February sports betting numbers within the next two weeks, and the entire US industry is waiting. February has proven to be a tough month for sports betting in many states, but Illinois could buck that trend.
Illinois has now emerged as the fourth-largest sports betting market in the United States, but third place is there for the taking. With Pennsylvania announcing a decrease in handle and revenue in February, Illinois could jump that state.
February had just one NFL game, and that was the biggest reason for a decline throughout the country. Bettors in Illinois were big on betting on basketball to begin 2021, and that could allow the state to post some impressive numbers.
March saw the launch of the Barstool Sportsbook app, and it is expected to become one of the top options in the state. The March sports betting numbers won’t be revealed until some time in May.
