Illinois Shatters Previous Sports Betting Record
Illinois has shattered another monthly record for total sports betting handle as the state continues to be one of the top sports betting markets in the US.
The one-year anniversary of the launch of sports betting was on March 9, and it has been a much better year than expected.
The Illinois Gaming Board announced that the January total sports betting total was $581.6 million. That shattered the previous record of $491.7 million, which was set in December 2020.
Revenue also saw a massive increase, as that total neared $50 million for the month of January. Over $7 million in tax revenue was collected in January, which will help the state tackle a budget deficit made worse by the pandemic.
All but $6.5 million of the bets placed during the month of January were made online, and that has been the trend since the first online sportsbook launched in June. Retail sportsbooks are starting to open throughout the state of Illinois, but online betting will continue to lead the way.
BetRivers was the clear leader in Illinois for the first few months of online sports betting, but it now sits in third place. BetRivers accounted for $109 million of the total handle in January.
DraftKings led the way with $243.5 million in wagers, and FanDuel was next on the list with $173.3 million in bets. These two operators were able to gain access into the state despite attempts to keep them out.
Basketball was the most popular sport to bet on during January, even though NFL football was a close second. The total basketball handle was $230 million, while NFL football betting brought in $159 million in wagers.
Parlay betting is also a popular option, with more than $109 million in bets being placed in January. Soccer ($30 million) and hockey ($17.9 million) were the fourth and fifth biggest betting markets in the state of Illinois in January.
The February sports betting numbers will not be out until March, but sportsbooks are already focusing on the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Illinois Fighting Illini are one of the favorites to win the event, but sportsbooks in Illinois cannot offer betting options for in-state college teams.
Barstool Sportsbook Now Live
For the first time since September 2020, a new sportsbook has launched in the state of Illinois. The Barstool Sportsbook app launched on Thursday morning, and it is expected to become a popular online IL sports betting option in the state.
Illinois is the third state to feature the Barstool Sportsbook betting app after Penn National Gaming acquired 36 percent of the company in January 2020. Penn National has partnered with Hollywood Casinos in Illinois to gain market access into the Land of Lincoln.
New customers at Barstool Sportsbook were given a free $10 when registering for a new account. Barstool is also offering a $1,000 risk-free bet to new customers, along with other promotions centered around Chicago sports.
The Barstool Sportsbook app is available for download on both Android and iOS devices.
