Barstool making push in Illinois with Bears betting offers
The Barstool Sportsbook officially launched in the state of Illinois on March 11, and there was plenty of fanfare and excitement that came in the first few weeks.
It appeared as if Barstool was going to be able to challenge some of the top sportsbooks in Illinois, but that just hasn’t been the case.
Not long after Barstool went live in Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker chose to let his executive order expire that was allowing for remote registration. An in-person registration has been in place in the Land of Lincoln since the beginning of April, and Barstool hasn’t been able to attract new customers.
That has caused some frustration with Barstool and with Penn National Gaming, but the company is looking to change its fortunes this weekend. Barstool is partnered with the Hollywood Casino in Aurora, and that is where some of the top personalities will be this weekend.
Barstool Sports has sent its most well-known employees to sportsbooks in other states before, and this has worked in the past. Not only will there be quite the celebration at the Hollywood Casino all weekend, but new customers can also receive a big payday.
Any new customer that creates an account in-person this weekend at the Hollywood Casino can get odds set at +1985 for the Bears Week 3 game. This number was chosen to represent the 1985 Chicago Bears, the most iconic team in the history of Chicago sports.
This offer is only good for new customers, but current customers are welcome to show up at the sportsbook as well. The “1985” promotion has a $100 max bet limit, but that could still produce a payout of nearly $2,000.
Illinois currently has just six online sports betting options, but the state continues to be one of the biggest in terms of both handle and revenue. Barstool is usually fifth on the list in terms of total betting handle, and it’s well behind the top two.
Until the mobile registration period opens back up in the state of Illinois, Barstool will have to continue thinking outside of the box to attract new customers.
Bears are Underdogs in Week 3
Using the Chicago Bears for promotion in Illinois is a no-brainer decision by Barstool, but they won’t be the only operator using that strategy this weekend. The Bears are coming off of a home victory in Week 2, and expectations are high now that Justin Fields has been named the starting quarterback.
If the Bears are going to pick up a second consecutive victory then they are going to have to do it as an underdog. Most sportsbooks in Illinois have the Bears as 6.5 or 7 point underdogs on Sunday afternoon against the Cleveland Browns, including DraftKings Sportsbook.
Fields have been a top option to win the Rookie of the Year Award in the NFL, even when he was just the backup. Those odds have since shortened since the season began, and this will be a Futures market worth exploring for most sports bettors in the state.
